1. Protect your dogs from fleas and ticks and give heartworm medication, as mosquitoes transmit heartworms.
2. NO dog houses in summer. They get too hot!
3. Never leave your dog outside without shade and cool water to drink.
4. Know the signs of heatstroke: Excessive panting, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, loss of consciousness.
5. NEVER, EVER leave your dog in the car. Cars can reach temps in excess of 120 degrees within minutes.
6. Practice stepping out of the pool with your dog until it can reliably do it on his own.
7. Practice getting into your boat, so if your dog falls in, it will know what to expect.
8. Never throw your dog in the water, even if it's wearing a life vest.
9. Drinking salt water can be hazardous or even fatal. Always provide fresh water!
10. Do you know what a normal body temperature is? 100-102 degrees.
11. Easy pooch cool down: Water poured on your dog and rubbed into the skin.
12. Apply sunscreen (zinc oxide or paba-free) on tender noses, abdomens and other exposed skin. Careful not to get it in eyes!
